Excimer Laser for Vitiligo

What is Vitiligo ?

Vitiligo is a condition when the skin loses its natural colour as a result of the destruction of melanocytes, the cells that create the pigment melanin. Skin patches that are white or depigmented are one of the indications of the condition.

The condition, which is thought to be an autoimmune infection, can affect any part of the body, but it most frequently affects the face, hands, arms, legs, and any area surrounding the genitals. Autoimmune refers to a condition in which the immune system of the body unintentionally hits cells that make the pigment melanin.Anyone, regardless of ethnicity or gender, can get vitiligo. It can also occur at any age, however it most commonly begins in youth or early adulthood.

Diagnosis of Vitiligo

A dermatologist or cosmetologist like Dr. Reshma Bhivgade, who is skilled and qualified to manage skin issues and concerns, will typically diagnose vitiligo at a vitiligo treatment centre.

Along with other testing, the treatment is usually based on an overview of the patient's medical history and a physical examination of the skin.

The doctor can make use of a unique lamp called a wood lamp to look for patches of the skin that are depigmented or white. The lamp produces ultraviolet light, which causes the vitiligo patches to glow differently from healthy skin and become brighter.

Signs and Symptoms of Vitiligo

The occurrence of white or depigmented patches on the skin is the most prominent and likely the only symptom of vitiligo. These patches can be small or extreme in size, and they can appear anywhere on the body. The face, hands, arms, legs, and genitalia, however, are the areas where they are most frequently observed.

The patches can be obtained in a variety of shapes. They can appear round or oval, with well-defined or uneven edges.

There are no other visible signs of vitiligo other the loss of skin colour. The patches are also generally asymptomatic. However, patients could feel tingling, burning, or itching in the affected areas.

Excimer Laser Treatment for Vitiligo

The excimer laser produces an extremely focused beam of UVB light. Dermatologists use a wand-like instrument to navigate the laser to the lightened portions of skin. White areas on the skin may regain colour as a result of the UVB rays stimulating repigmentation in the the outer layer.

This process takes less than 30 minutes to complete in the hospital and is painless. Dermatologists may advise twice-weekly sessions for four to six months in order to see the desired results while determining whether more treatment is needed.
